I took part in the Back in Time Antique Prop Challenge by Sierra Division for the first time. I’ve wanted to work on a prop project for a long time, and I was looking for an object that wasn’t something you see every day, while also giving me a good opportunity to practice texturing.
After a lot of browsing, I finally chose a magic lantern based on the Peacock Sciopticon.
The challenge had a few limitations: it ran for one month, the prop had to stay under 25k tris, and it could use only one 2K texture. The prop was modeled in Blender, with the high-poly sculpting done in both Blender and ZBrush for the leg supports. The texturing was done in Substance 3D Painter.
After submitting my entry, I decided to rework a few things while keeping the original limitations. I’m uploading both the original challenge submission and the newer version here.
For the reworked version, I rearranged some of the geometry to bring more detail to the lens and soften the overall silhouette, while still keeping the prop under 25k tris. I also worked further on the textures to bring out more wear and age on the object.
I tried not to change things too drastically. I only moved a few loops here and there to achieve softer, rounder shapes for the renders, while keeping the original UVs, model, sculpts, and bake.
